Roots & Shoots Diepsloot Greening Club

Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots programme is about making positive change happen in our communities; for animals, people and for the environment in general.

With tens of thousands young people in 130 countries, the Roots & Shoots network branches across the globe, connecting youths of all ages who share a common desire to help make our world a better place.

roots-and-shoots-in-full-swing-ediepslootThe Diepsloot Greening Club is a unique group of primary scholars that have the opportunity to learn about new and exciting ways of improving their community using the basic principle of respect. This also fits into the bigger outcome of the Diepsloot 2030 project which primarily fosters business development in the Diepsloot area. The Greening Club is partly funded by The Wot-If? Trust and currently has 50 participants that meet on a weekly basis at the Father Louis Blondel Centre – the other funding comes from The Jane Goodall Institute. The curriculum introduces our young participants to interesting (and relevant) information, as well as practical skills that involve; Animals, Greening, Technology, the Environment, and People.

As an introduction to the club, participants meet with a handful of facilitators and begin to learn more about Ecology. Lessons include CAPS aligned information about the classification of different animals, learning about how to respect animals, endangered species of South Africa, as well as an engaging lesson on insect bite prevention. The participants have even made friends with a similar group in New Zealand and learnt about the great work they’re activating in their country. Zaituni Njovu, a special visitor from Tanzania’s chapter helped inspire the Diepsloot Greening Club to keep working hard by reminding them that they are a part of a global community of youngsters making a difference.

One of the highlights for the facilitators and participants was certainly the visit from Paws for People, and the special ambassador dogs that touched the lives of children. We look forward to experiencing 2016 in its’ entirety as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots programme. There are some incredible events coming up for the Diepsloot Greening Club. If you would like to volunteer time or resources to this club or programme, please contact the Wot-If? team or Rita on education@janegoodall.co.za to find out how to become involved.
